![]() The Closet Confidential project I ambitiously started months ago had to fall by the wayside when the second-year medical curriculum took over my life. I never quite abandoned it though, and when I found thoughts of clothes—the purposes they serve, ways of wearing them, what they mean to me—encroaching on my day-to-day without providing a respite but sucking up the thought and energy that should have rightly gone to my studies, I started wondering if this was a sign that clothes do mean a great deal more to me than I was willing to admit, and that if I didn't do something about this preoccupation, it could mire me in unproductive thought and negativity. Which is why I've actually taken a step back from the topic of clothing, as I would in the first steps of approaching an academic discipline. I've stopped fixating on accumulating clothing, for example, and started focusing on finding what I like. The pursuit doesn't preclude purchases—over the winter, I've acquired some sweaters, a blouse, some stockings, a jacket and a pair of shoes—but as it turns out, I like and wear all of them frequently. I'm still in a bit of a limbo right now as far as clothes are concerned: getting closer to a place that I like, but still with no clue what my end goal is. I'm in the process of compiling a tentative wishlist that I intend to use as a litmus test by which to become acquainted with the essence of what pleases me, rather than a proscriptive list of things to buy. One of these most recent additions to that wishlist was a trench coat, from Club Monaco, in a rich shade of camel with chocolate leather piping. It was instantly flattering to my figure and coloring... but it also cost 549,000 won (approximately 500 USD). I regretfully left it on the rack, but days passed and I found myself still moping over it. I went hunting for a picture that I could ask friends' opinions on, or maybe hang over my desk as motivation to refrain from blowing my money on cheap thrills so I could possibly purchase it on sale. I wasn't expecting to find this: ![]() Well that ain't so bad, what's the big deal about? ![]() How about this? ![]() Or this? These pictures are not from Club Monaco, as they don't seem to put pictures of their collection online, but of a similarly designed coat from Burberry's website, which stands proudly alongside Ralph Lauren—though admittedly not quite as egregiously—in the tradition of turning beautiful women into praying mantises.
